3D Art Styles Compared: Stylized, Realistic and Photorealistic
How stylized, realistic and photorealistic 3D art differ in look, cost and production time, and which suits games, film, VR, AR and product visualisation.

The world of 3D art is constantly evolving, with new techniques and technologies emerging all the time. For VR, AR, games and film, 3D art is an essential element that can make or break the final product. As a studio creating 3D assets for these industries, we understand the importance of choosing the right 3D art style for each project.
It is often one of the first questions asked by our new clients, what style is best? In this post, we will discuss the three main styles: stylized, realistic, and photorealistic, and analyze the cost and time required to create each. This will ultimately help you understand which style suits your project best.
Stylized 3D Art
Stylized 3D art is characterized by its exaggerated and simplified forms. It often features bold colors, thick lines, and exaggerated features, such as large eyes or exaggerated expressions. This style is often used in animated films, cartoon shows, and video games, as well as in marketing campaigns and product visualizations.
The cost and time required to create stylized 3D art is relatively low, due to the simplified forms and lack of realism. However, it should be kept in mind that for professional work, time consumption will vary depending on the complexity of the project and the experience of the artist. This style of art can be a good option for projects with a tight budget or strict/immediate deadlines.
Realistic 3D Art
Realistic 3D art, on the other hand, is characterized by its attention to detail and its attempt to accurately represent the subject matter. This style is often used in architectural visualizations, product visualizations, and for film and video game cinematics.
The cost and time required to create realistic 3D art is higher than that of stylized 3D art, due to the attention to detail and the need for accurate representation. Creating realistic models will consume more time and resources compared to stylized ones, and therefore, will be more expensive. This style of art is best suited for projects that require high levels of realism and precision.
Photorealistic 3D Art
Finally, we have photorealistic 3D art, which aims to create an exact replica of real-world subjects and environments. This style is often used in architectural visualizations, product visualizations, and film and video game cinematics. It is the most difficult and time-consuming of the three styles to create.
The cost of creating photorealistic 3D art is significantly higher than that of the other two styles, due to the extensive attention to detail, high-resolution textures, and complex lighting and shading required. The time taken to create this kind of 3D art is also the longest and usually only done by the most experienced professionals. This style of art is best suited for projects that require ultra-realism and a high level of precision.
Stylized vs Realistic vs Photorealistic: Pros and Cons
| Style | Pros | Cons |
|---|
| Stylized | Low cost; fast to produce | Simplified forms may not suit every project; time still varies with complexity |
| Realistic | Attention to detail; accurate representation; suits projects needing realism and precision | Costs more than stylized; more time-consuming |
| Photorealistic | Ultra-realism; highest precision; suits exact replicas of real subjects | Needs high-resolution textures and complex lighting and shading; the slowest and most expensive |
Choose the style based on your project's goals, audience and budget. Stylized art suits tight budgets and deadlines; realistic and photorealistic art suit work where accuracy matters, such as architectural and product visualisation.

3D Art Styles FAQs
What are the main 3D art styles?
Stylized (exaggerated, simplified forms with bold colours), realistic (detailed, accurate representation) and photorealistic (an exact replica of real-world subjects and environments).
Which 3D art style is cheapest and fastest?
Stylized. Its simplified forms take less time to model and texture, which makes it a good fit for tight budgets or immediate deadlines, though complexity and the artist's experience still affect time.
What is the difference between realistic and photorealistic 3D art?
Realistic art represents a subject accurately and in detail. Photorealistic art goes further, aiming for an exact replica with high-resolution textures and complex lighting and shading, which makes it the slowest and most expensive style.
Where is each 3D art style used?
Stylized art is common in animated films, cartoons, games and marketing. Realistic and photorealistic art are used for architectural visualisation, product visualisation, and film and game cinematics.
